Notes on the northern lights
Clouds are the real aurora forecast
Why cloud cover decides most aurora nights, why one cloud percentage misleads, and how to use hourly forecasts and a car to find a clear sky.
What the Kp index really tells you (and what it doesn't)
Kp is a global, three-hour measure of geomagnetic activity. Here is what it means for your aurora night, why location matters, and what it leaves out.

Should I go out tonight, where, and when?
Aurora Atlas answers with a decision instead of a Kp number: the best spot within your drive tonight, and the hours to be there.
- A score for every spot. Clear sky, aurora activity, darkness and the moon, hour by hour, from 0 to 100.
- Clouds first. Each spot has its own hourly cloud forecast, so you know when a drive inland finds clear sky.
- Plan a trip. Every night of your dates ranked by darkness, moon and the forecast as it comes in.
Free. Aurora Atlas is version 2.0 of Aurora Tromsø Northern Lights, on the same App Store listing; your settings come with you. Needs iOS 16.4 or later. Scores come from an improved model (why the numbers changed).
