Henningsvær football pitch

The famous football pitch on Henningsvær's outermost island, a short walk from the village: the no-car choice if you are staying here. The pitch and streets are lit, so stand on the rocks just west of it.

Why it works for the aurora

View
North-west to north over the sea and the low rooftops of Henningsvær; the peaks of Austvågøy block the north-east..
Darkness
Some light pollution, grade 3 on a scale from 0 (darkest) to 5. Glow from a nearby town; bright aurora is easy to see, faint aurora is washed out.
Aurora
Under the auroral oval: aurora can be overhead even on quiet nights.

Before you go

The floodlights may be on for training: keep off the pitch. Stay on the paths, and keep back from the icy rocks and the sea edge in the dark.

Dress for standing still in the cold, bring a head torch with a red light, and park only where parking is allowed. A forecast is guidance, not a promise: check the road and weather warnings for Norway before a night drive. See our winter safety note.
