Strákagöng car park · Siglufjörður

Free car park just past the western end of the Strákagöng tunnel, beyond Siglufjörður at the tip of the Tröllaskagi peninsula. The Arctic Coast Way names it as a northern lights place: the town is hidden behind the mountain and the sea horizon to the north is dark.

Why it works for the aurora

View
North and west over the open Arctic Ocean; the steep mountain above the tunnel blocks the east..
Darkness
Dark sky, grade 1 on a scale from 0 (darkest) to 5. Little artificial light; a good place for faint aurora and the Milky Way.
Aurora
Under the auroral oval: aurora can be overhead even on quiet nights.

Before you go

Road 76 on this side is often closed by snow and avalanches: check umferdin.is and vedur.is first. The tunnel is single-lane; stop only in the car park.

Dress for standing still in the cold, bring a head torch with a red light, and park only where parking is allowed. A forecast is guidance, not a promise: check the road and weather warnings for Iceland before a night drive. See our winter safety note.
